Mermaid Variant Population

Mermaids or fishpeople are a species of intelligent humanoids that live throughout the continents of the planet. Although they reproduce sexually, that is by mixing genes of two different members of the species, they do not have two different sexes. Due to various reasons all mermaids are commonly refered to as female though.

There are various kinds of mermaids, which all combine traits of some sort of aquatic animal with that of a human. However, aside from the angler fish no actual fishes are within the repertoire of the animals they resemble. The most common kinds of mermaids are Jellyfish, Squid, Octopus and Anemone, but there are a multitude of others. All mermaids have two legs and two arms at least, as well as eyes, mouths and some sort of hearing and smelling organs, but they can have various additional vestigial limbs. They are amphibious and can breath both air and water, and although some kinds can dry out, most of them do not need constant contact with water. Very common among them is an electrosense organ, and the uncommon electric eel kind can actually give off electric shocks. The differences between mermaids are mostly reduced to the number of vestigial limbs and head adornments, as well as the number of fingers and toes, but of course there are various exceptions.

As stated earlier they reproduce sexually, but they are neither mammals nor reptiles, and do not possess distinct genitals of the kind other humanoids possess. Instead they produce spore cells in special organs inside their bodies, which are layered beneath their skin. They do have most to all erogenous zones that humans have, and, after sexual stimulation of these zones and the eventual climax, both (or more than one) participants in the sexual intercourse release these spores from their bodies. Outside, these sporecells merge with that of the other participant when coming in contact, while those with the same genes annihilate. The combined cells need a body of water to gestate, and eventually they become transparent spawn or eggs in which the fetus grows. Only very few cells complete this gestation period, and even fewer completely grow from a fetus to a full baby mermaid. During the growth process the spawn cell filters nutrients from the water around it, and from special photosynthethic algae, essentially, it is the mermaid's polyp state.

Typically, Mermaid parents only look after the gestated fetuses, and ignore everything beforehand. There is remarkably little attachment to growing polyps among them, although they care a lot about their young.

Due to their frail stature, gentle soft voices and angular faces other humanoids generally perceive all Mermaids as looking very feminine so they are regarded as women, even though they have neither female genitals nor breasts. After the polyp state they eat normally, and like other creatures have to excrete waste, and have the appropriate orifices.

Although traditional Mermaid cultures remain in the Northwest Tidelands, the Marusian Swamps and the Great Mudflats the majority of Mermaids now lives among other humanoids as a Minority. They usually crave social contact and are known for their curiosity. As amphibious creatures they can close tightly and "hide" all their orifices to become waterproof, and having no visible sexual organs, usually see no need to wear clothes except for the sake of heat regulation and protective value, although some acknowledge the habit of wearing clothes for politeness sakes. They are known to have relationships with other humanoids, and although penetrative vaginal sex is impossible because of their biology, many enjoy other kinds of sexual intercourse.

Traditional Mermaid tribes follow a kind of open polygamy with one main-mate, and have tightly nit family-structures because of this. Compared to the nontraditional mermaids these have little need and grasp for technologies and are living comparatively primitively.
